Advent and Christmas

Through the four weeks of Advent, which began in 2008 on Sunday 30 November, the Church waits and prepares itself for the coming of Christ at Christmas. As Christmas gets closer the events leading up to the birth of Jesus are recalled: the appearance of an angel to Mary with news that she would bear the Son of the Most High and to this she said ‘Yes’.

In our Advent and Christmas sections, you'll find:

Information, reflections, resources, prayers and passages from Scripture.

The Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman was an Anglican received into the Catholic Church in 1845.

He was made a Cardinal in 1879. The cause for his beatification is currently being considered. He was declared a Venerable by the late Pope John Paul II in 1991 after the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints decreed that he exercised all of the Christian virtues in a heroic degree.

Year of St Paul

Pope Benedict XVI has declared 28 June 2008 to 29 June 2009 the ‘Year of St. Paul’ to celebrate of the 2,000th anniversary of St Paul’s birth. St Paul was born a Jew and later became a Christian after a powerful experience of Jesus Christ on the road to Damascus.

After some time away in prayer, he spent the rest of his life encouraging the early Christian communities through his personal witness and his letters. As the ‘Apostle to the Gentiles’, St Paul made many missionary journeys and endured great sufferings to preach the Gospel message. Thirteen of the letters in the New Testament are attributed to St Paul.
