Bishops

The bishops are appointed by the Pope, the successor to Jesus’ follower Peter, to lead the Church in their home countries.

Each bishop is the leader of a diocese, a specific geographical area.

There are 22 dioceses in England and Wales, and in the larger ones a bishop may be aided by an auxiliary bishops. Together with priests, bishops are responsible for the spiritual growth of Catholic believers in their diocese. They have a teaching role, guiding Catholics towards an ever closer union with Christ, in the light of the Gospel, the tradition of the Church and the teaching of the Pope. To aid them, bishops meet regularly as a group to pray and reflect on what the Gospel message has to say for the world today. The ‘Common Good’ or good of all in our society is a permanent concern, as is care for the poor, the weak and the sanctity of all human life. Dialogue with members of other faiths or branches of the Christian family is also an essential part of the bishops’ role.
