In today's two-part Middle East Analysis , Bishops' consultant on the MENA region Dr Harry Hagopian looks at the state of play in Syria
In part one, Dr Hagopian looks at the six-point peace plan for Syria proposed by UN Envoy Kofi Annan:
"I believe the Kofi Annan plan represents the last chance saloon for Syria. There have been so many attempts, so many resolutions, so many meetings in order to try to find a solution to the Syrian problem.
"On the one hand people want to get rid of the regime but on the other hand, they are not sure what to replace it with because there's no clarity with the opposition. There are so many intertwined dynamics in Syria - not just in the country itself but in the region."
In part one, we also look at the realities in Bahrain - a state that just weeks ago controversially hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The focus has now shifted to the plight of hunger striker Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, a human rights and political activist who will be retried by a civil court in Bahrain after a military court sentenced him to life in prison for plotting against the state.
