Devotion by Design: Room Two

22/08/2011 11:30 am

Devotion by Design exhibition

Devotion by Design is an exhibition at London's National Gallery exploring the function, original location, and development of altarpieces in Italy during the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.

The podcasts reunite our resident clerical critics Fr Christopher Whitehead, the Clifton Diocese Director of Adult Education and Evangelisation and Dr James Hanvey, a Jesuit priest who’s an expert in art and culture.

Room Two

In this podcast, we look at the second of six rooms making up the exhibition.

A splendid, well-lit altarpiece depicting the ascension of St John the Evangelist has grabbed the attention of our two cultural clerics in this room. Fr Christopher Whitehead elaborates...

"What I find fascinating about this piece is the entire story it's telling... it's drawing you into the life of the saint. It's catachetical in a sense - fleshing out the story and life of St John."

Duration: 5m 52s

Devotion by Design podcasts were released every Monday throughout August and September 2011.
