A statement from Bishop Declan Lang, Bishop of Clifton and Chairman of the International Affairs Department of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, on the EU Referendum:

"We are living in a period of political uncertainty, facing a new future. At this time it is important that we have a sense of duty to work for the common good and not create barriers of division and prejudice.

"We should have a profound respect for one another and this should be reflected in the way we speak and behave. We need to keep in mind the needs of all citizens particularly those who may feel marginalised at this present moment and continue to be a tolerant society free of racial and religious prejudice.

"Though political leaders have an important role in negotiating with other governments, all of us have a responsibility to shape the future in a way that recognises that we belong together.

"Please pray for our political leaders and for the well-being of our country."
